Turtles in Cancun

For as long as air travel has made it possible people have come from all around to enjoy the beautiful beaches and warm water of Cancun. Most come with romantic notions in mind. And why not, the scenery and the hot weather are enough to make anyone feel the passion of the tropics.

But humans are not the only one who have caught on to the appropriateness of the beaches for mating. Turtles were doing it long before we were. Every year during the hottest months turtles mate in the water near the coast. Then the female turtles climb up on shore and lay their eggs. Females will make 4 to 7 nests during each nesting season and lay up to 200 eggs in each nest. They will nest every 2 to 4 years. The most fascinating fact is that female turtles only need to mate once because they can store their mate’s sperm and create multiple nests with it.

After about 2 months the turtles will break out of their eggs and shuffle to the water, where most of them will be eaten. Only 1 in 1,000 or .001% of turtles will survive. Since all the eggs are laid at the same time. They all tend to hatch at the same time. For most people it is a once in a lifetime experience to get to see this amazing event.

Maybe it’s time for you to follow the turtle’s example and head down to Cancun to enjoy the warm waters and the amazing beaches. If your lucky you might even see some turtles nesting or some little turtles hatching.
